Pay attention to abandoned cars

An unused or abandoned vehicle is an environmental hazard. It can still contain fluids like petrol, brake fluid or anti-freeze, these can start to leak and contaminate the environment.

This is especially likely with older vehicles with pipes that may be corroded. The metal body itself can also start to rust and become dangerous to children and pets.

What are the E.L.V.s Regulations?

The Waste Management (End-of-Life Vehicles or ELV) Regulations 2006 came into effect on the 8th of June 2006 in an effort to make car manufacturers responsible for vehicles they put on the market.

All Registered Owners of vehicles are now obliged to dispose of their vehicle through an A.T.F. You should only deal with a properly permitted authorised treatment facility when getting rid of your old vehicle as these are the only ones that can issue Certificates of Destruction. The A.T.F shall notify the Vehicle Registration Unit of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in Shannon, Co. Clare and the destruction of your vehicle will be noted in the records of the National Vehicle File. The only document you need to give the facility is the Vehicle Registration Certificate (RF101) or the log book for the car.
